READ-RITE SHIPPING 40 GB PER PLATTER GMR HEADS FOR WESTERN DIGITAL

FREMONT, CA � October 30, 2001 -- Read-Rite Corporation (Nasdaq: RDRT) today announced that they have received volume orders and are shipping 40GB/Platter GMR heads for Western Digital�s (NYSE: WDC) 3.5-inch, 5400 RPM ATA hard drive program.

�Read-Rite is pleased to again be qualified on a significant Western Digital program,� said Jim Murphy, senior vice president-customer business units.  Added Murphy, �we look forward to another successful high volume program as demand shifts from the 20  & 30 GB programs to the 40 GB per platter programs.
