READ-RITE CORPORATION TO SUPPLY HEADS TO HALO DATA DEVICES

MILPITAS, CA and SAN JOSE, CA -- July 29, 1999 -- Read-Rite Corporation (Nasdaq: RDRT) today announced it has entered into a sole source supply agreement with Halo Data Devices to provide heads for use in Halo Data Devices' CompactFlash Type 1 form factor 250 megabyte microdrive.

"Read-Rite's GMR technological expertise and manufacturing capabilities were key factors in our selection of Read-Rite as our head supplier," said Gordon Campbell, Halo Data Devices' chairman and chief executive officer. "We are pleased to secure Read-Rite as a key supplier in our development of the world's smallest disk drive," he added.

"The supply agreement with Halo expands our customer base into small form factor storage devices, for use in portable and embedded applications. In addition to the supply agreement, we have taken a small equity position in Halo. We believe there is a significant market opportunity for the microdrive in both consumer and computer applications," said James J. Murphy, Read-Rite's senior vice president of customer programs. "We look forward to working with Halo Data Devices in this emerging market," he added.

Based in San Jose, California, Halo Data Devices is a privately held company developing, manufacturing and marketing miniature data devices for emerging portable, mobile and embedded storage applications.
